Nigeria has one of the largest youth populations in the world, yet millions of young people continue to face unemployment, poverty, and limited economic opportunities. A recent study by Deinibiteim Monimah Harry explores how entrepreneurship and digital skills development could become critical solutions to Nigeria’s growing youth unemployment crisis.
The study examines the relationship between entrepreneurship, youth empowerment, and digital skills development in Nigeria, arguing that the country’s current education and employment systems are failing to adequately prepare young people for participation in the modern global economy.
According to the study, more than half of Nigeria’s youth population is unemployed, with approximately 53.4% of the country’s 160 million youths lacking stable employment opportunities. The research attributes this crisis largely to a mismatch between the skills taught in schools and the skills demanded in today’s increasingly digital and competitive labor market.
The study highlights that many graduates leave educational institutions without practical employability skills relevant to emerging industries, technology-driven businesses, and global digital markets. As a result, many young Nigerians struggle to compete effectively in both local and international job markets.
One of the study’s major findings is that over dependence on Nigeria’s oil sector has contributed significantly to limited job creation. The concentration of economic opportunities within a narrow sector has reduced the availability of sustainable employment for the country’s rapidly growing youth population.
The research argues that enhanced digital skills development could help address these challenges by empowering young people to create e-businesses, participate in the digital economy, and build entrepreneurial ventures capable of generating employment and reducing poverty.
Importantly, the study suggests that youth empowerment programs in Nigeria have often failed because policies were poorly coordinated and disconnected from the country’s social, political, and economic realities. Without strategic and intentional investments in relevant skills development, many empowerment initiatives have produced limited long-term impact.
The study emphasizes that Nigeria’s large youth population should not be viewed as a burden, but rather as a major national asset. However, realizing this potential requires deliberate investment in digital literacy, entrepreneurship training, technological innovation, and workforce development.
The findings also reinforce the growing importance of digital economies globally. As industries become increasingly technology-driven, countries that fail to equip their youth with digital competencies risk widening unemployment gaps and economic inequality.
The study recommends that government institutions, educational systems, and policymakers prioritize youth-centered digital skills development programs capable of improving employability, encouraging innovation, and expanding participation in global digital markets.
