As traditional agricultural sectors face increasing climate and economic pressures, alternative farming practices are emerging as vital lifelines across West Africa. Snail farming, in particular, is rapidly gaining traction as a resilient, low-emission strategy to boost local economies, generate employment, and increase animal protein production. However, transforming this grassroots activity into a structured, highly productive agricultural sector requires a deep understanding of current localized practices and operational bottlenecks.
A comprehensive study by a research team including Hilaire S.S. Worogo, Massourou Tidjani, and Alassan S. Assani investigates the structural dynamics of this industry within the municipality of Abomey-Calavi in southern Benin. Published in Scientific African, the research surveyed 90 active snail farmers across 10 districts. By applying multiple correspondence analysis (MCA) to the field data, the authors successfully mapped the demographic profiles, cultivation practices, and primary constraints defining the region’s production units.
The demographic findings reveal a structured and largely literate workforce. The snail farmers are predominantly male, married, and represent ten different ethnic groups, with less than 15% classified as illiterate. On the operational front, producers cultivate three primary species—Archachatina marginata, Achatina achatina, and Achatina fulica—raising them in both monoculture and polyculture systems. Production scales vary significantly, with individual flock sizes ranging from 100 to over 6,000 snails destined for both commercial marketing and direct consumption. The data analysis categorizes these farmers into three distinct clusters, driven by significant variations in how they design habitats, source feed, and manage watering systems.
Despite its high potential, the study exposes critical friction points stunting the sector’s growth. Across all three clusters, farmers face a severe lack of structured technical support and a noticeable absence of commercially available, species-specific snail feed. Furthermore, producers struggle with aggressive predators, water management issues, and a deficit of high-quality breeding stock. The authors conclude that while snail farming holds massive promise for alleviating unemployment and securing regional food security, it urgently requires targeted governmental and agricultural interventions to evolve into a fully viable, scalable industry.
