The effective prevention and management of livestock diseases require a holistic approach that goes far beyond clinical intervention. At the absolute center of this challenge are the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of the livestock owners themselves. Understanding how farmers perceive health challenges, what preventive measures they actually implement, and how they respond to sudden outbreaks is critical for safeguarding both rural economies and public health.
A detailed cross-sectional study by a research team in Ethiopia—including Liuel Yizengaw, Haregua Yesigat, Kifile Wondimagegnehu, Arega Tafere, Habtamu Yalew, Dessalew Habtie, Natenael Teshager, and Yibeltal Simeneh—investigates these exact dynamics. Published in Veterinary Medicine and Science, the study surveyed 412 livestock owners across five selected districts of the East Gojjam Zone in the Amhara Region to uncover the core determinants of animal health management.
The findings painted a complex picture of rural farming challenges. Unsurprisingly, 96% of the participants cited feed shortages and limited free grazing land as their primary production constraints, closely followed by disease at 92%. Furthermore, the community demonstrated a strong foundational awareness of health risks; 83% of respondents openly agreed that livestock diseases pose massive economic threats and carry dangerous zoonotic potential capable of jumping from animals to humans.
However, the study exposed a critical bottleneck: a severe disconnect between what farmers know and what they actually practice. The data revealed that while 57% of respondents possessed adequate medical knowledge and 69% maintained a highly desirable attitude toward health management, less than half (49%) executed good disease prevention and control practices.
This behavioral gap becomes alarming when looking at daily biosecurity measures. A mere 32% of respondents reported using personal protective equipment (PPE) when approaching or treating sick animals. Even more concerning, only 21% properly disposed of dead animal carcasses through safe burial or burning, leaving the rest of the community vulnerable to environmental contamination and cycling infections.
Socio-educational status emerged as the single most powerful predictor of these metrics. The study’s regression models showed that illiterate individuals were significantly less likely to possess adequate knowledge or implement safe farming practices compared to neighbors with a college-level education or higher.
Ultimately, the researchers conclude that awareness is only half the battle. Because the community already possesses a favorable attitude toward animal welfare, future public health interventions and agricultural extension work must shift their focus away from basic information delivery. Instead, resources must be funneled into community-level practical training that actively helps farmers translate their existing knowledge into life-saving, daily biosecurity habits.
